April 4 turned to a day of tragedy and remembrance after over 100 people were mercilessly killed in Syria after a chemical attack. Dozens of children were killed, and many are still being identified.

This incident occurred in a Syrian rebel war-zone, and the Syrian military is blaming insurgents for carrying out the attack. However, many are doubting the reliability of these claims, and it seems the Syrian military might have actually played a role in the attack.

Chemical warfare has become all too familiar to the people of Syria, as the war-stricken country has turned to drastic measures. However, no attack has ever been so deadly as the one on April 4.

Russia, a key foreign player in the matters in the Middle East, has announced that they had absolutely no involvement in the attack; however, the United States is still investigating the issue. The United States and Russia have disagreed vigorously over matters pertaining to the Middle East, so it is routine that the US government would be skeptical of Russian involvement.

In terms of how the United States has responded, they have begun drafting a statement to condemn the vicious attacks. President Trump has previously blamed his predecessor, Barack Obama, for igniting the Syrian crisis, so it remains unclear how Trump will attempt to create peace in Syria.

In the past, chemical warfare of any kind has been largely condemned by most Western powers as well as the United Nations. Moving forward, there will most likely be discussions regarding the abolition of chemical warfare.

For now, the United Nations and other global powers are deciding if they should donate money to the Syrian’s efforts to rebuild their country, and by doing so, they will hopefully be able to put an end to future deadly attacks.
