Selena Gomez is back with her second studio album, Revival. This album is, in a sense, a continuation of her greatest hit album, For You, which left off with the R&B tune, “The Heart Wants What It Wants.” The album continues this vibe with the track, “Good For You” which is about trying to be good for your man, featuring a special guest appearance from A$AP Rocky.

As far as instrumentation goes, the emphasis is different for each song. The title track mainly emphasizes trance-like synthesizers and a beat that sounds like something off an A$AP Rocky album. However, this contradicts the feeling that she has changed for the better and has renewed strength. It sounds more like she’s falling down and is on her last legs.

“Same Old Love” has an annoying, piano score playing on loop with finger snaps in the background. The vocals on the track are even more irritating with the sound of a whiny, teenage girl rather than a insightful, mature woman who has learned from her experiences.

Overall, the sound doesn’t match the lyrical content that is presented on the album.
