As October begins the first things that come to mind are Halloween, apple picking and hayrides. However, it is also important to keep in mind that is also breast cancer awareness month. To kick off breast cancer awareness month the HHS field hockey team hosted a pink out game on Oct. 1. The girls were sporting their new hot pink breast cancer awareness uniform tops on the field. Additionally, the team hosted a bake sale fundraiser to collect donations for the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center during their games.

The varsity team kicked off pink out night on the turf against Bridgewater. The girls held their own the first half and were able to keep it at 0-0 at halftime. The game was back and forth as both teams battled for the ball and had multiple shots on goal. Unfortunately, the Lady Raiders lost out to the Panthers in a controversial stroke call in the circle in the last remaining minute of the second half. Despite the upsetting loss, the girls were able to keep their heads high as they had never had such a close game with Bridgewater.

The JV team played immediately after the varsity team on the grass fields. Their game, much like varity’s, was extremely close. The girls were aggressive and fought for possession for the whole game. Unfortunately, the girls did not pull out a win and ended losing by one to Bridgewater.

Both games were tough and well played which made for an exciting night. The girls had fun and played their hearts out. The main focus of the pink out games was not to win, but it was to raise awareness for a good cause. At the end of the fundraiser, the team was able to raise an amazing $210 from the bake sale. The Booster Club will be matching this total so the HHS Field Hockey team is making a donation of $420 to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
