“Bekfast Club” Goes Undefeated to Win 2019 Dodgeball Tournament
October 17, 2019
On Oct. 13, the annual Boy’s Soccer Dodgeball Tournament took place at 11:00 a.m. in the main gym. Despite having a lighter turnout compared to previous years, the tournament was still a major success providing entertainment for the students and the opportunity to give back to the community.
Last year, Dodgy Style 2 won the tournament with an all-underclassmen lineup. However, this year saw a new team rise to the top. Senior Tyler Watson had been a long time participant in the tournament, but had always found himself coming up a little bit short.
“We came close every year, so it felt great to win the tournament,” Watson said. “Especially during our senior year, it meant a lot to finish it out with the people I started with.”
Along with Watson, seniors Adam McCaffery, Will Shokoff, Jake Laifer, Garrett Smith, Liam Smith, and Josh Hartman came together to form the Bekfast Club.
The competition was stiff again for Bekfast Club this year. Dodgy Style 2, the returning champs, were favorites heading into the tournament. The two teams went head to head in the first game of the day; whoever won would have huge momentum to start the tournament.
To everyone’s surprise, the contest was not even close. Bekfast Club won in two straight sets to take the win in dominant fashion. This trend had become apparent throughout the day as the Bekfast Club would never lose a match.
They ended up a perfect 4-0 heading into the championship match and had yet to drop a single set. They were up against Dodgy Style 2 again in a repeat of the day’s first contest. Bekfast Club took the first set, however, they found themselves in trouble and lost the second one. Ultimately, the Bekfast Club prevailed and won the tournament. This win would now cement their name in HHS dodgeball history.
“Three years ago, me and the boys fell just short of the title,” Hartman said. “That loss was definitely hard to handle, but it made us hungry to come back and win. We’ve been chirped and laughed at for our constant choking, but now the chirping stops. We are champs and no one can take that away from us.”
