Top Winter Sport Performers

After a long winter season, it’s time to acknowledge some of the Winter athletes from each sport that put forth their hard work and grit to their teams. Hillsborough saw major accomplishments from various sports teams: both boys and girls swim achieve sectional titles, a sectional finals appearance for the girls basketball team, and a Group 4 title in indoor track and field.

 

Ice Hockey: Jason Wolff (Sr.) and Lleyton Soares (Sr.)

Hillsborough Ice Hockey finished with a 15-10-2 record thanks to these two forwards. By combining on 36 goals and 69 assists, Wolff and Soares led a high powered offense to the state quarterfinals. Before the season, there was a question of who would replace Jude Kurtas, but the dynamic duo of Wolff and Soares stepped up to the plate.

 

Boys Swimming: James McChesney (Sr.)

McChesney helped lead Hillsborough Boys Swimming to a sectional title. With nine first place finishes in 100 Free, two first place finishes in 200 Free, and seven first place finishes in 50 Free, it was clear to say McChesney accomplished a lot in his senior year. 

 

Girls Swimming: Skylar Ward (Sr.)

Ward helped propel the Raiders to their fifth straight sectional title. She earned six first place finishes in 100 Fly and 50 Free, two first place finishes in 200 Free, and one first place in 500 Free. This season, Ward helped the Raiders continue their winning ways.

 

Wrestling: Cole Psemeneki (Jr.)

The junior racked up wins in three different divisions. He was most dominant in the 113 pound division, boasting an impressive 12-2 record. Psemeneki even earned Second Team All-Skyland Conference. With one year left, look for Psemeneki to step it up in his senior season.

 

Girls Basketball: Elissa Nsenkyire (Sr.) and Dani Pescatore (Sr.)

The front court of Nsenkyire and Pescatore helped lead the Raiders to an impressive 19-10 record and a sectional finals appearance. Pescatore led the team in scoring with 346 points, while Nsenkyire followed, scoring 278. Both were leaders on the court and helped shape the culture for future Lady Raider basketball players. 

 

Boys Basketball: Allen Holmon (Sr.) and Jared Smith (Sr.)

Holmon and Smith had the abillity to take over the game at any moment. Holmon has the most three pointers in a season on record at 63, and led the team in scoring with 341 points. Smith was a double-double machine and gave the third-seeded Marlboro a run for its money in the state tournament, scoring 29 points, grabbing 19 rebounds, and blocking six shots.

 

Indoor Track and Field: Peter Cavanaugh (Jr.) and Kirstyn Schechter (Jr.)

Cavanaugh helped a promising junior class rise and make it to the group finals. Cavanaugh ran as a part of the 4×400 relay team, splitting 52 seconds from the first leg.  He also posted a 2:02 800 time. Schechter contributed significantly to the season as well. Schechter broke four records: the 55 meter dash, the 55 hurdles, the high jump, and the high jump relay. She also propelled the girls track team to their first ever Group 4 Title.
