Every spring, students at HHS are required to request the electives they want to take the next year to work towards fulfilling their graduation requirements. It can be extremely difficult to make a decision when it comes to choosing your electives because students don’t think they can have classes with friends, fulfill your requirements, and actually have fun in the class all at the same time. What these students don’t realize is that there are actually so many great elective options at HHS that can fulfill all their wants and needs.

When a student enters high school, they are told they have to take a full year of visual/performing arts classes. Not everyone is always the most artistic or musical person out there, but I assure you there are classes you can take that you will still enjoy even if you hate art. I recommend taking Guitar during your time HHS because it is so much fun, and you can learn the basics of the instrument even if you have never picked up a guitar in your life. Taking guitar is a great choice if you are looking for a laid back experience learning something new with an awesome teacher.

If you are looking to take electives that could influence your future career choices, you should take classes like Sports Injuries I, or Intro to Engineering Principles Honors.

If you are in grades 10-12 and you are interested in a career in the field of athletic training and sports medicine, Sports Injuries I may be the class for you. In this class, you explore basic injury prevention, evaluation and treatment as well as taping procedures used in sports. This elective may be a challenge, but it is certainly one of the most interesting electives you could take to learn something you wouldn’t normally in a regular P.E. class.

If you are an incoming senior, and are interested in possibly majoring in Engineering in college, you should take Intro to Engineering Principles Honors. In this half year class you take your physics knowledge from a prerequisite physics class knowledge, and apply it problem-solving principles involved in engineering. This is a great elective to take if you are unsure of what you want to do in the future to find something you may be interested in.

Last, but not certainly not least, I encourage every student incoming to grades 10-12 to take Newspaper as a full-year elective. If you are interested in journalism, enjoy writing, and are looking for a fun environment, Newspaper is definitely the class for you. In this class you cover essential journalism topics, and write about anything ranging from movie reviews to school news. The freedom you have in this class to expand your interests and write about anything you’re interested in, is something you may not find in any other class.

Although spring time can be stressful with choosing from such an extensive list of electives, students at HHS should know there are so many wonderful options out there waiting to found.
