Mother’s Day is the perfect opportunity to show affection to the people who love us and know us best. But how are can you do that when circumstances prevent you from carrying out longtime Mother’s Day traditions? Luckily, there are plenty of creative ways to make this day memorable, even if the coronavirus makes it difficult to follow through in your typical plans.

Make a Homemade Gift

With many stores closed and deliveries taking longer than they used to, finding a gift online could be difficult this Mother’s Day. Fortunately, it’s long been known that handmade gifts have a personal quality to them that you simply can’t get anywhere else. And, with all the free time now available due to stay-at-home orders, its easier than ever to put together to thank your mom in a more unique (and affordable) fashion. Even if art supplies at home are scarce or worn out, the effort and thought put in will shine through. Plus, if your at a loss for ideas, the internet is full of ideas for cards, decor, and countless other DIY mother’s day gifts. Regardless of what you pick, however, its certain to tug at your mother’s heartstrings.

Get Outside

Depending on where you live, going for a walk or visiting a local park could be great ways to spend quality time with your mom while social distancing. New Jersey has recently reopened state parks and trails, further widening the opportunities to enjoy nature this Mother’s Day, but even a simple walk around the neighborhood can give you valuable time to talk and bond with your family. While restaurants and large attractions may not be open, spending time in nature can add a relaxing element to this holiday and give you the opportunity to express your gratitude without putting yourself or others at risk.

Breakfast inĀ Bed

Serving breakfast in bed may be one of the most classic ways to celebrate Mother’s Day, and now, due to social distancing, it is one of the few festivities that won’t be interrupted. All it takes is some forethought and and the will to get up a little early for preparations. Treating your mom to her favorite foods shows that you know and understand her, not to mention it gives a much needed break from the chaos of a typical morning. For those who worry their cooking won’t be up to mom’s standards, there’s always the option of ordering from a local restaurant in order to support local businesses and show your mom that you care.

Make a Donation in her Name

Due to the economic and medical struggles brought on by the coronavirus, millions are struggling to get by, making this the perfect time for a somewhat nontraditional Mother’s Day gift. Think about the causes she supports or the charities she’s donated to in the past. Making a donation in her name simultaneously shows that you took time to think about her values and provides much needed help during these challenging times.

All in all, this Mother’s Day certainly won’t be typical, but that doesn’t mean is has to be any less meaningful. There are countless unique ways to make the most of this day without sacrificing your own safety by opposing stay at home orders. Regardless of what you choose to do, what’s most important is that you recognize the selflessness and support of mothers worldwide and find some small way to return the favor.
