All American Underwhelms Viewers
May 13, 2020
After watching countless Netflix shows stuck inside because of COVID19, a show I chose to try watching was All American. After seeing what the show was about, I thought it would be very interesting to watch.
Spencer James is a star football player from Crenshaw, Los Angeles. His life was simple, he had a fun brother, a loving mother, and was in love with football. He was the star player of his high school team, and a straight A student. However, his whole life began to change when he met former star NFL player Billy Baker.
Baker is the head coach of the football team at Beverly Hills High School, a neighboring town next to Crenshaw. The towns are completely different. Crenshaw is filled with gangs, violence, and poverty. On the other hand, Beverly Hills is very safe, and almost all the kids at the high school are extremely wealthy.
Baker offers James a spot on the football team. It would change his life because being coached by him would give him opportunities for the next level. Going to a better high school would also help academically. James and his teammates go on to win the state championship, but not without a lot of drama. James’ father comes back after being gone for eight years, his history with people from gangs in his old town still lingers, and he begins to have problems with his old and new friends.
The problem with this show was that it was very predictable and “cheesy”. In every football game, it was obvious that James was going to shine, he was going to get the ball, and be the hero. It was not only on the football field where this kind of situation happened. When James would argue or be fighting, it was very easy to predict that he was going to be alright and figure the situation out.
“The acting was not very good either,” senior Milan Jain said. “You could really notice how much better actors are in other shows comapared to this one.”
Although the show does have a lot of interesting parts and drama, it does get boring and repetitive at times. James often has similar problems coming back to haunt him, and is always acting out or mad about something. I do not think of this show as one that really hooks you in, and keeps you wanting to watch the next episode over and over again.
