On May 25, a 46-year-old black man died in Minneapolis, Minnesota after a police officer placed his knee over Floyd’s neck too hard to the point that he could no longer breathe. This incident sparked protest from people all over the world in support of the rights of black people and against police brutality. People have condemned racism and police brutality, and are demanding justice for Floyd.
In 2013, a human rights movement entitled “Black Lives Matter” was founded to campaign against violence and racism directed at the black community. People across the globe have begun to protest in the streets and on social media using the phrase “Black Lives Matter” to show their support for the cause.
Many are worried about violent protests that have popped up in the United States. A few protesters have participated in violent acts including setting fire to cop cars and stealing. Despite this, a majority of the protests in the United States have been and continue to be peaceful with people carrying signs and marching through the streets chanting to support their beliefs.
The fight for racial equality has also been taken to social media where ordinary people are posting their support for the black community by encouraging others to sign petitions, and go to protests. Celebrities have also been using their platforms to encourage their fans to support the Black Lives Matter movement and do their part to make a change.
Not only are people in the U.S. protesting, but people all over the world have joined the fight for racial equality. Protests have been reported in the UK, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Canada, and more both in solidarity with the American protesters and to highlight racism in their own countries.
Recently, actor John Boyega rallied protesters in London in response to the death of Floyd as he broke down into tears giving a speech to the crowd.
“Black lives have always mattered,” Boyega said. “We have always been important. We have always meant something. We have always succeeded regardless. And now is the time. I ain’t waiting…We are a physical representation of our support for George Floyd.”
