With the drop of their tenth LP, the Foo Fighters have released Medicine at Midnight on Friday, Feb. 5. Containing nine songs, this 37-minute album is certainly like no other. Although it contains some songs fitting the Foo Fighters’ familiar vibe like “Cloudspotter”, other songs such as “Making a Fire” and “Chasing Birds” are filed under a different, unheard of groove for the Foo Fighters.

Opening up the album with “Making A Fire,” the Foo Fighters tap into their classic alternative rock sound while adding a modern twist.

“I guarantee that most musicians have that groove or that vibe somewhere within them,” David Grohl said.

Inspired in part by hit disco/rock artists ABBA, Prince, and David Bowie, this album is definitely out of the comfort zone of the Foo Fighters. Touching on the acoustic guitar in the song “Waiting on a War”, the album does not abandon the band’s roots but is able to appeal to both casual listeners and diehard fans.

The album has been received favorably by critics, namely because of its derailment from the normal punk rock vibe of the Foo Fighters. The tasteful inspiration of disco legends like ABBA is really what change takes this album from a good record to a great one.

“If you’ve been in a band for a long time, you get comfortable in that place people are familiar with,” Grohl said. “In some sort of attempt at longevity, you have to be able to reach out and try things you’ve never done before”.

Overall, Medicine at Midnight is unlike any other Foo Fighters album we’ve ever seen before. The veteran band really knows how to mix it up with this release and this album is definitely worth a listen.
