In the first stage of Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel released a television series WandaVision, about Wanda Maximoff, who has powerful magic abilities, and her android husband, Vision, in the form of a SitCom that is unlike any past Marvel release. Having died in the 2018 release Avengers: Infinity War, The Vision’s presence confused many fans, who quickly began to theorize how he came back to life and why the two Avengers are in this strange SitCom world.
On Jan. 15, 2021, the first two episodes of WandaVision aired exclusively on Disney+, with one episode coming out every subsequent Friday. This past Friday, Mar. 9, the ninth and final episode was released, confirming many fans’ theories while also leaving many unanswered questions.
To briefly summarize the first eight episodes, the viewers found that after seeing Vision’s dead, soulless body, Wanda had an emotional outburst in which she recreated Vision and altered the reality of the town of Westview, New Jersey, where they raised the superpowered twins, Billy and Tommy. Meanwhile, director Tyler Hayward of S.W.O.R.D. was still in possession of The Vision’s corpse, and at the end of episode 8, he is seen reviving the body, but turning him into a colorless, smug version of himself. Then, Wanda’s seemingly amiable neighbor, Agnes, reveals herself to be Marvel Comics’ evil witch named Agatha Harkness who wanted to learn Wanda’s reality-altering abilities in order to make herself more powerful.
Episode 9 resumes where episode 8 left off, with Agatha holding Wanda’s “twins” hostage. The episode quickly develops into a dramatic battle in which Wanda faces off against Agatha, Vision defends her from White Vision, and the twins hold off the S.W.O.R.D. agents, all in an epic battle filled with beautiful, yet mind-boggling special effects.
In the end, Wanda defeats Agatha and absorbs her powers to transform herself into the Scarlet Witch, the comic version of herself. Meanwhile, The Vision is able to restore White Vision’s memories from his past life, and White Vision faintly says, “I am Vision,” before flying away.
Ultimately, Wanda makes the tragic decision to close the hex in on itself to save the residents of Westview. In a heartbreaking conclusion, both The Vision and the twins, whose presences are tethered to the hex, disappear. The heartbreaking dialogue exchanged between Wanda and The Vision left many viewers in tears.
Vision: “We have said goodbye before.”
Wanda: “We’ll say hello again.”
Vision: “So long, darling.”
As of now, Marvel fans are looking forward to the upcoming series, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, which airs its first episode on Disney+ on Friday, Mar. 19, 2021. As for Wanda, we will hopefully see her story continue in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, coming Mar. 25, 2022 (which would have come months sooner if not for the pandemic).
Nominated for Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directing, along with “Ted Lasso” and “The Queens Gambit”, WandaVision is outstandingly directed and incredibly produced and it is definitely worth watching.
