After turning the world upside down with her massive hit “drivers license”, Olivia Rodrigo followed up with her new hit single “deja vu”. The song was released on April 1 and has been on the charts ever since. She has announced that her debut album will be out May 21 and “deja vu” is the second single taken from this record. Along with the song, Rodrigo also released a music video to go along with it that stars Talia Ryder that has already gotten over 23 million views.

The song was co-written By Rodrigo and Dan Nigro, who also helped produce her last single “drivers license.” The pair wrote the song in one day and have been perfecting it ever since. The song is somewhat psychedelic and is not a ballad like “drivers license.” However, the song is still similar to her last in the way that she calls out her alleged ex. The song explains how he is out with his new girl acting all original and unique when in reality she was the one who started this persona he created. Her lyrics “Play her piano but she doesn’t know/That I was the one that taught you Billy Joel/A different girl now but there’s nothing new/I know you get deja vu” puts his behavior in the spotlight.

The song draws from songs by Taylor Swift and Lorde that hold the same vibes. She has background vocals of her almost screaming the lyrics which is common in Taylor Swift’s music. Although, there is less focus on the instrumentals like in “drivers license” where the piano was a main part of the dramatics within the song. Here, the song relies more on production-based sounds that blend nicely with her voice.

The song is extremely catchy and already trending on social media apps like TikTok. This anticipated release has answered the question of whether Olivia Rodrigo was a simple one-hit-wonder or the newest up-and-coming pop star. This perfect driving-with-the-windows-down song has not only made her a highlight of 2021 but also proven that she is here to stay within the music industry.
