On Dec. 2, HHS’s National Art Honors Society (NAHS) and Tri-M Music Honors Societies held their first Coffeehouse of the year, an always-anticipated student event. Here, over twenty students showcased their art and musical talents for their peers, including many seasoned senior performers.

Senior Olivia Padrusch, President of NAHS and a showcased artist, reflected on her artistic process and the overall environment at Coffeehouse. Her featured work, an original oil painting on a three by three-foot canvas titled ‘The Fall of Icarus,’ took her over 120 hours during the summer. An ambitious and skillful rendition of the Greek myth of Daedalus and Icarus, Olivia says the painting “helped [her] learn how to use atmospheric perspective,” and was met with an audience that is “warm and supportive.”

Seniors Kayla Lockburner and Kevin Esposito jammed out to Kayla’s original song, titled “Under the Moon.” When asked about her experience as both a performer and spectator at Coffeehouse, she also remarked about the environment at the event: “both have been such positive experiences for me, and I highly recommend coming when you can!”

Coffeehouse is the first stop for many HHS students on their way to stardom, and senior and NAHS historian Jackson Diaz proved just that by dazzling the audience with his commissioned poster design for the short film “Sweet as Honey.” “What was super cool was that I got to fly out to Los Angeles to attend the premiere in October, my first red carpet premiere,” Jackson said.

If you’re looking to showcase your talent in front of a warm, intimate audience, or you’re looking for a night of fun and treats (there really is coffee!), swing by on Friday, Feb. 17, and witness the future of the performing and visual arts right in our school.
