Veteran teacher Mr. David Henry joined the high school math department and special education departments, co-teaching Algebra, for his first year in Hillsborough. He said he enjoys working with numbers, so, in college, he chose to pursue math education, instead of banking which was his original plan.
As a math teacher, Henry’s opinion on math is that it’s pretty straight-forward since there’s an answer or a way to work toward the answer. Henry said he wanted to become a math teacher since he enjoys math and he’s good with it. “Working with numbers made sense to me,” he said.
Henry transferred from West Windsor Plainfield Middle school where he taught mostly sixth grade and some eighth graders with a block schedule format, different from Hillsborough High School. Henry said, “The biggest difference between the two places is that Grover was using a block schedule, so classes met for 85 minutes every other day instead of HHS having daily 50 minute periods”.
Henry describes himself as comical and sarcastic. He said he tries to not take everything overly seriously unless he needs to. Henry said, “I enjoy joking around with my students and athletes.” He noted that there are times when having fun is acceptable and moments when things need to be taken seriously.
Married for seven years, Henry lives in Hillsborough with his family. He has a son that is in Kindergarten, and a daughter who is only two and a half. Henry currently doesn’t have any pets, but he and his wife plan to have one later on. Once their kids are older, they wish to adopt a dog, specifically. Born in Pittsburgh, then raised in West Windsor, Henry attended Rutgers, took undergraduate and graduate courses to pursue the career of math, and personally enjoyed it.
For hobbies and interests, Henry enjoys playing golf, watching football and other sports. He also enjoys spending quality time with his family and two kids. At his previous district, he coached many different sports, including soccer and lacrosse. Henry played lacrosse growing up and loved it, but before that he also used to play baseball. He said, “There were a few other kids in my neighborhood and friends from school that began playing, so that is a major part of the reason why I switched from playing baseball to lacrosse.” For this school year, Henry said he is mostly looking forward to meeting and interacting with my students and colleagues in a new building on a daily basis.
