The JV cheerleading team has started their season off with afternoon practices and a busy game schedule. Focused on perfecting their routines and supporting the school at games, the team continues to develop their skills and coordination. Although not at the varsity level, the JV team is an essential part of the school’s spirit, bringing energy to every event they participate in.
Coach Amanda Rebelo, a first-year high school coach, but an all-star coach for 2 years is ecstatic about the group of girls this school year. “They are an amazing group of student athletes, and I want to help them master the foundational skills of cheerleading and reach their full potential as a team,” she said.
Rebelo, a former cheerleader who competed with her high-school cheerleading team and was an all-star team for around ten years, said cheerleading helped shape her into the person she is today. She said she wants to have a strong impact on the team. “I want them to grow a love for cheerleading and continue to learn how to work together to grow stronger as a team,” Rebelo said.
The team practices Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and sometimes Fridays from 3:30pm to 4:30pm in the wrestling gym, according to Rebelo.
The team grows from each practice every week. “ I enjoy learning new skills. The environment is very encouraging, we challenge each other to do more and become better,” said Heather Finnigan, a freshman.
One of the freshman flyers on the team, Rayah Rashidishahat shares her enthusiasm for the team. “I’ve been doing this for nine years. I do it because I love it. It’s even more exciting because I’m doing it for high school this year,” she said.
Other teammates share her excitement. “With new challenges and new members of the high school team, it keeps this sport so fun. It’s great to cheer with people I’ve done this with for so long, and new people too,” sophomore Isabelle Antonelli said.
As a nine-year cheerleader, freshman Gianna Lomelo said she is beyond excited for her first year in high school sports. “I always loved cheer, and I’m happy to be a part of something new this year,” she said.
