From cool costumes to class competitions, the Raiders at Hillsborough High celebrated Halloween with fun festivities.
As part of the yearly rivalry for spirit points, multiple lunchtime activities serve as opportunities for each grade to win spirit points. On Halloween, the student council hosted their first activity, a mummy wrapping competition. Two students from each grade were challenged with wrapping their partner up the fastest in an entire roll of toilet paper. Though spectating students had some sensational reactions, according to Jay Mccloskey a senior and period 8 participant, “It’s a lot harder than you think,” McCloskey said. “The paper breaks really easily.”
Despite the challenge, each grade except the juniors won a mummy wrapping competition. However, the juniors came out on top as far as points awarded for students in costume. In second place for dress-up points was the sophomores, in third the seniors and forth the freshman!
This year HHS saw some strong costumed duos and group costumes with friends partnering up and coordinating costumes. Payton Progin and Ben Haase, both seniors, dressed as the iconic couple, Daphne and Fred from Scooby Doo. “I had our costumes planned out in August after looking on Pinterest for inspiration,” Progin said.
Juniors Inaya Siddiqui and Lily Duea Ebner along with senior Charlee Mclaughlin, dressed as Gumball, Darwin, and Anais from the Amazing World of Gumball show. “We were able to celebrate our friendship through the costume and spend quality time together while trick or treating,” Siddiqui said.
The onesie craze from previous years found its way back this year.
Senior Olivia Gorka also went the onesie route this year. “Onesies are a comfy costume option,” she said.
Many people took the stand-alone route, with some special solo Halloween costumes. Sophomore Corinne Kramer dressed as Raven from Teen Titans. Senior Eddie Yarusinsky had one of the boldest outfits at school this year. Dressed as Patrick Star, painted from head to toe in bright pink face paint, Yarusinsky stood out. “Last year I was The Pope and wanted to one up that, and thought, what better way to do that than to put a bald cap on and paint myself pink?’” he said.
Many teachers also rocked their costumes this Halloween, several group costumes. The teachers of the 500s hallway and the library all dressed up as different cereal box characters. According to Ms. Ashley Dermek, one of HHS’s library media specialists, the teachers came up with this idea last year and Mr. Paul Goldstein (aka Mr. G) liked it so much that they used the idea this year. HHS’s other library media specialist, Mrs. Lisa Pronko said, “Mr. G was super excited about Halloween this year and came to us on probably the second day of school and asked us to help him organize it.”
Halloween was all around a day that highlighted the fun of friendship and togetherness for HHS students. Senior Gabriel Cruz said that Halloween this year gave him some perspective on the value of quality time and self expression. “Halloween makes you less afraid to express your interests through your costume,” he said. Until next year Raiders!
