If you’re in need of a new bedtime story for your little loved ones, Hillsborough High School’s very own self-published student writer, Jeeya Patel, released her children’s book titled The Adventures of Pablo and Pepas: When Pigs Fly this past October.
“It feels incredibly rewarding,” Patel said. “I’m excited to share my story with others and hope it inspires other young people to pursue their own creative dreams.” Patel is an active member of the Hillsborough community in and out of school. Since her freshman year, she’s participated in girls soccer, she’s the secretary of Project Green, and she’s a student representative for the student council. She also works at Feeding Hands, a local food bank, helping to distribute food and household items.
The book features two main characters, Pablo and Pepas, who are best friends. Pablo is always happy and loves trying new things, but Pepas tends to be a bit of a grouch, often reluctant to join in on Pablo’s adventures. In this story, Pablo dreams of flying and embarks on a journey to make that dream come true. Along the way, he faces many ups and downs, and none of his attempts to fly seem to work. When Pablo decides to give up, Pepas — despite his grumpy nature — won’t let him quit. In a heartwarming twist, Pepas surprises Pablo by taking him on an airplane, showing that true friendship always finds a way to make dreams soar.
Patel started the book last year, but took a break from writing.. With the support and motivation of her family, she continued writing the book which is based on her little sister’s love of pigs and bedtime stories.
“This book is hopefully a part of a series that I plan to eventually write,” Patel said.
Though Patel plans to continue the series with additional characters and new adventures, she will eventually venture out of children’s books.
