Each year, HHS staff members, parents of HHS students, or members of the Hillsborough community nominate two HHS staff members to be recognized as the Teacher of the Year and the Education Support Professional of the Year. This year, Ms. Carlin Dunne, a STEM teacher, was selected as the Hillsborough High School Teacher of the Year, and Mrs. Aimee Thomson, the College and Career Counselor, was selected as the Education Support Professional of the Year. Dunne and Thomson were chosen by a committee of previous Teacher of the Year and Education Support Professional of the Year recipients from HHS and two HHS administrators for a total of 12 members.
When asked about what aspects of the recipients stood out to the committee, HHS Principal Jeffery DiLollo said, “The number of nominations, the nature of the nomination, and their impact on our students/school community were all contributing attributes that made the recipients stand out.” Dunne and Thomson are both veteran staff members of HHSandare in their eighth year working at HHS.
Reflecting on the selection, Dunne said, “I feel so honored to be named the HHS teacher of the year. There are so many amazing teachers here and to even be considered by one person would be an achievement in my eyes. Being a teacher is something I’ve wanted for myself since I was young, and it’s just as fun as I always hoped for. Every day is something new and exciting, and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. I admire so many of our teachers, especially some of the people who were my teachers when I was a student at HHS, so being named the Teacher of the Year is such an incredible feeling.”
Similarly, Thomson said, “It’s such an honor to be recognized as the Education Support Professional of the Year. In my unique role at HHS, I’ve had the opportunity to support over 4500 students as they prepare for their next steps after high school. I’ve met so many wonderful students and families, and enjoy getting to know the seniors during their final year as they prepare for adulthood. I always hope that my work can be a small part of shaping their successful futures, wherever life takes them!”
