As visitors step in the Art Hallway of HHS, vibrant paintings, intricate sculptures and a true showcase of talent shines light into the space. People quietly move from one exhibition to another, occasionally stopping in awe and admiration of specific, especially breathtaking pieces. HHS’s annual Winter Arts Festival turns the regular art hallway into a declaration and celebration of HHS’s students’ creativity.
The Winter Arts Festival was held from January 8 to 9 in the Art Hallway by decorating the entirety of the space with countless pieces of art in an effort, by art teachers, to highlight the abundance of talent expressed by their students.
For students, the festival was the culmination of months of hard work. One student, Sarah Colaneri, a senior, described the inspiration behind her art. “I’m working on my portfolio for college right now, and I thought this would be a good piece to go towards it” Colaneri said who had drawn a visual of the hallway that narrowed from one end to another, making it appear almost tunnel-like. Colaneri said “I like how it is accurate of the hallway.” Another student, Reghan Bice, a senior, explained the origin of her flower art. “I have my own personal garden at home so I picked flowers that are in there.” The festival featured works of all types such as paintings, drawings, sculptures, fabric painted scarves and more.
The event also featured the dedication of Boro art teachers to bring their students’ creativity into the spotlight. “I think it’s important to highlight our students, so that we as a community can see that our kids are talented in so many different ways, and this event just showcases it for us,” said HHS Vice Principal, Mrs. McCabe. Art teachers could be seen throughout the week working to first set up the exhibition so that every piece got the recognition it deserved. Later teachers checked to make sure the display continually stayed in perfect condition, whether that meant putting fallen pieces back up or setting up rules to make sure no artist’s pieces were damaged.
Attendees who explored the festival, immersed themselves in this unique world. “The art students of HHS are incredibly talented and clearly gifted and skilled,” said freshman Isabella Blanco after viewing this immense expression of talent. “It’s amazing to see what many are capable of and their talents as artists” said another freshman Lara Reilly.
As the exhibition came to an end—this year—it left behind a greater appreciation for the artists of the HHS community. The Winter Arts Festival proved that warmth through appreciation can spread even in the coldest months of the year. If you are upset about missing this expression of art, make sure to keep an extra careful eye out for Hillsborough High School’s upcoming Spring Festival.
