Each year, the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) awards the Edyth May Sliffe Award to teachers of mathematics in Middle School and High School across the United States and Canada. This year, Hillsborough High School’s very own Ms. Marina DeVino received the award, recognizing her unique contributions for motivating students in mathematics by participating in the MAA American Mathematics Competitions (AMC). DeVino is one of twenty-nine other recipients of the award.
To be nominated for the award, a student, parent, fellow teacher, associate, school volunteer, or school administrator may submit a nomination. For the nomination to be considered, the teacher must be nominated by two individuals. In determining the award winners each year, the MAA committee reviews a number of factors including but not limited to, the number of students participating in AMC Competitions, improvement in AMC scores compared to previous years, and efforts to encourage students to seek mathematical instruction outside of the classroom.
In her eleventh year at HHS, DeVino currently teaches Algebra I CP, Geometry CP, and AP Computer Science Principles. In response to winning the award, DeVino said, “I am honored that my math team captains and other senior members of the math team took the time to nominate me.” DeVino also added, “Math competitions like the AMC 10 & 12 not only require a strong math skill set, but the ability to problem solve and apply knowledge in new and challenging ways. They promote creativity and perseverance, the very skills I look to nurture in my math classes.”
Parth Halani, a senior and one of three Captains of the HHS math team said, “We nominated Ms. DeVino because of her outstanding dedication to the math team and her genuine commitment to helping each of us succeed. She goes above and beyond to prepare us for competitions, making extra time for practice sessions and providing valuable resources. Her encouragement has fostered a strong sense of teamwork and perseverance within our group. She truly deserves this recognition for the countless ways she has supported and inspired us.”
Halani added, “Ms. DeVino’s enthusiasm for math and her unwavering support for our team have been truly inspiring. She constantly reminds us that persistence and creativity are key to solving complex problems, which has motivated us to approach challenges with a positive mindset. Her belief in our abilities has encouraged us to compete at higher levels and strive for excellence. More than just a mentor, she has shown us how passion and hard work can lead to meaningful achievements.”
“As a mathematics teacher, my goal is always to share my love of mathematics with my students and drive them to be the best they can be. As the math team advisor, I have the opportunity to work with students who are passionate about mathematics and want to share their knowledge with others. I hope the news of this award signifies Hillsborough’s dedication to providing a strong and diverse mathematics program and inspires more students to participate in future competitions” said DeVino.
