One of the most anticipated days of the year is almost here. Our annual Spirit Night will take place, April 25. Each grade will participate in competing in various games such as the three-legged race, scooter relay, tug of war, and more.
But the fun is not limited to Spirit Night. In the days leading up to this event, students dressed in each class’s colors each day. The participating grades and themes are Freshman Force, Sophomore Superbowl, Jurassic Juniors, and Senior Sitcom. Each student had the opportunity to buy a t- shirt to represent their grade. Buying this shirt gives students access to go to the auditorium during the school day to take part in watching the spirit night video and learning the chant that is presented to the school at the event.
Throughout the year, students could take part in various activities during lunch, giving them a shot to win points to represent their grade, which will go toward spirit year. There will be more activities and games for people to volunteer for which will count for points for each grade to see who gets the most points. Friday, each class will also present theme displays in the commons, paint murals on the walls by the gym, film videos based on the class theme and design the class t-shirts that students will wear all day and night. Teachers will vote for the best in each category. These scores along with the class chant and dances, performed at Spirit Night, will be counted as points for each grade.
Mrs. Caryn Brogan, a social studies teacher at HHS and Student Council adviser, takes charge and prepares for this day with the student leaders. “The Student Council has to do so much prior to Spirit Night. We have to organize and make sure we have the equipment for all the events, paint our own mural and the schedule of events. The Student Council is also there to make sure the dance practices, mural painting and theme display setup runs smoothly. We have to organize wristband sales (we have new ones this year!) — there is so much more — we don’t sleep a lot that week.”
Interested students can join in any of the activities: mural painting on the hallways of the high school, joining the dance and attending practices, signing up for the games, and purchasing a shirt to represent your grades theme.
Students share their excitement and what they are most looking for in this event in different ways.
Senior Olivia Gubitosa looks forward to her last Spirit Night. “I’m most looking forward to watching the movies everyone makes. I am going to participate by doing the three-legged race in the games.
Senior Christiana Muller also shares her excitement and support in participating in this upcoming event. “I am most excited for the games, and, while I’m not getting involved in the actual spirit night, I have participated in some of the days in school where we have the opportunity to receive points.”
Senior Ashley Bevaqua shares her participation during Spirit Night. “I am getting involved by being in the senior sitcom dance. It’s such a fun routine with loads of people involved,” she said.
Brogan said, “Spirit Night has always been my favorite night of the year. It is the only time that ALL the grades come together and just have so much fun. Spirit Night also has a little for everyone – artists, dancers, tech savvy people, athletes, etc.”
Wristbands will be sold in the commons for $10 during the school day on Thursday and only lunch periods on Friday. Spirit night will begin at 4:00 p.m in the HHS auditorium and doors will open at 3.30 p.m.
