Is AP Pre-Calculus too hard for you? Is CP calculus too easy for you? Well lucky for you, Honors Pre Calculus is coming back to HHS! A few years ago at HHS the course was called Math Analysis H. According to math supervisor Kyle Dattola, the school offered Math Analysis CP and Math Analysis Honors. The course name was then changed to Pre-Calculus to align with how colleges would label the course. Prior to last year, the college board offered AP Pre-Calculus.
The original Math Analysis H course was similar to the curriculum from the college board for AP Pre-Calc. The school has offered Pre-Calculus CP and AP Precalculus last year (’23-’24) and this year. This is similar to the course selection Hillsborough offers for Calculus. After looking at the data associated with the AP Pre-Calculus, the school has decided to add a Pre-Calculus Honors course in addition to the courses they currently offer.
Many teachers noticed a significant increase of students dropping down to CP classes instead of taking an AP class. AP classes are college-level courses whereas Honors is basically CP and AP combined. Danielle Burk, an AP Pre-Calculus teacher, has recognized this trend of students in her AP class and opting to take CP. The school’s decision to add back the Honors course was a better choice, said Burk.
Another teacher, Matthew Chernoff who teaches AP Calculus BC, agrees with Burk. “It’s definitely a good choice because it allows students who could do more than CP work,” Chernoff said.
Since it’s so early in the scheduling process, it’s too soon to interview any students who will be taking the course or teachers who will be teaching it. According to Dattola, the supervisors have made sure to have this course approved and finalized prior to the program of studies being announced to students. As a result, when students were looking at different courses to take, Honors Pre-Calculus was available.
If students are looking to take this course during the 25-26 school year, it’s official, Honors Pre-Calculus is making a comeback.
