On graduation night, Hillsborough High School seniors have the chance to celebrate in a safe and supervised way through Project Graduation. The event is alcohol and drug free and is organized with the help of parents, teachers, volunteers, and other members of the Hillsborough community. The fundraiser has become a tradition at Hillsborough and continues to be supported by the community each year as a way to keep students safe while still allowing them to celebrate.
Project Graduation is planned months in advance by parent volunteers who work together to raise money and organize the event. Fundraisers and donations help make it possible for all seniors to attend. This shows how the community comes together to support students during an important moment in their lives. These fundraisers not only help pay for the event, but also allow parents and community members to stay involved in the school and support students outside of academics.
The event takes place after the graduation ceremony and gives seniors time at Iron Peak Sports & Events to spend time with their classmates. By having a supervised celebration, Project Graduation helps keep the students safe on a night when many families may worry about parties or late-night activities. Having a supervised event on graduation night helps reduce safety concerns for families and encourages students to celebrate responsibly.
Senior Alyssa Parola, who volunteers for Project Graduation shared why the event matters to her. “I volunteer because I know it is helping my class and future classes have a safe and fun graduation night,” Parola said. She also said her favorite part of volunteering is “getting to know other volunteers.”
Project Graduation does not only affect seniors. Parents, students, and local supporters all play a role in making the event happen. Gym teacher Amy Borer who is an active volunteer in the program added her thoughts. “The idea of project grad is to give graduates a safe alcohol and drug free celebration on graduation night,” said Borer.
As seniors get ready to move on after graduation, Project Graduation continues to be an example of how the Hillsborough community supports its students and works together to celebrate important milestones, making graduation both memorable and safe.
