Two well-deserving teachers were awarded the Governor’s Educator of the Year award and the ESP of the year. This award allows staff, students or parents to nominate a teacher that has made a difference. The award criteria is based directly on the work and the skills that have been shown by the individual. According to Principal Jeffrey DiLollo, the educators are selected by a committee here at the high school. The committee is made up of past recipients of the award who who still teach at HHS. The committee includes DiLollo and one of the assistant principals. The voting for this award is a blind vote, and the people of the committee cannot see the results until it is finalized.

“Mr. Puma has taught a variety of English classes including advanced. He displays exceptional instructional care for his students.” DiLollo said. “He is a very organized and balanced educator that was recognized by students and staff around Hillsborough. He builds great relationships and cares deeply about her students and them being successful. Having the opportunity to celebrate teachers is a critical part of this job because it reminds us of the best of us and shows the impact of support and care by others.”
Eric Puma said he was shocked and humbled by his recent win as teacher of the year. Puma has only taught at HHS and has been working here since 1996. He has always taught English and has coached the boys soccer team here since 1996. Puma said his favorite part of being a teacher at Hillsborough has been the students. “They’re so fun to work with and they bring so much energy and enthusiasm to school,” Puma said. “They are very fun to be around as well. A lot of the teachers are more deserving of this award, so I am very thankful to be receiving it this year.”
Mrs. JaLisa Williamson said she was shocked, happy and excited on her win as ESP of the year. “I felt like I made an impact,” she said. This is her fourth year working at Hillsborough, but in the past she has worked at other schools. She was also a student advocate at Somerset county. Finally, she said her favorite part of her job is making a difference in students’ lives. She wants them to feel comfortable in talking to her and allowing her to be a part of her support system.
DiLollo cited Williamson’s care for students as the reason for her recognition. “Mrs. Williamson is considered by many to be one of the greatest supporters at HHS. She builds great relationships and cares deeply about her students and them being successful,” he said.
Many teachers at HHS definitely deserve this award including the ones that were chosen this year. DiLollo underscored the importance of the recognition process. “I’m thrilled to be able to do this annually. It’s critical for the school community,” DiLollo said.
