Necessities for the cold are clothing such as fur coats, gloves, ear muffs, snow boots, or Uggs. Several students at Hillsborough High School answered a few polls, which consisted of everyone’s favorite winter activities, hot drinks, and places to go to in Hillsborough.
28 seniors, 21 juniors, 23 sophomores, and 24 freshmen voted. According to the total of 96 responses, for winter activities, hot drinks, and places to go. Though this sample survey is only a fraction of our students, the results share insight into students’ cold-weather preferences.
Students cited an inside activity as their favorite. 72 votes went to staying inside or watching a movie, while sledding and playing in the snow took second with 59 votes followed closely by baking with 54 votes. These results reveal a preference for warm, indoor activities over cold, outdoor activities. Ice skating and reading tied with the same number of 30 votes, while skiing trailed with 24 votes. Both are central attractions during the winter season and continue to dominate when students seek activities during these cold months.
Next, the most favored hot drink goes to hot cocoa with 74 votes, second place tea with 16 votes and third place goes to coffee with 7 votes. The majority vote on hot cocoa also left a vote of 0 for eggnog. Clearly, warm chocolate continues to occupy the spotlight as it continues to warm people’s bodies and hearts..
From simply staying at home near the fireplace to going out to the movie theater, Hillsborough offers a variety of options in the winter. Students mentioned places where decorations are hung that entertain numerous customers. Other places are favorites just out of pure enjoyment. The places the students wrote about were Duke Farms, Sweet Parlor, Starbucks, Eminato Cafe, Norz Hill farm, the gym, or even the Christmas Tree lighting near our Hillsborough library.
Many of the voters also mentioned good places to go sledding. The best hills are in areas include their own backyard, a mountain behind Ann Van Park and neighborhoods near Hillsborough Road.
Winter offers the excitement and cheer of the holiday season and a time full of love and opportunity for a new start with the new year.
Senior Elizabeth Wilke shares her insight on what winter means to her and the memories associated with the season.
“My best memories of winter are the ones spent with my family,” Wilke said. “I love playing outside in the snow with my siblings and my dog, sledding, and having snowball fights. It is so much fun when we first build with snow or roll up balls to make snowmen.”
Winter has an impact on all students in different ways. “The winter makes me feel very cozy inside. I love spending the cold days inside, snuggled up by the fire with a warm blanket and hot chocolate,” Wilke added.
Surrounded by nature, Hillsborough offers the benefits of every season, including aspects of the winter season. Students captured all the comforts of the season from cold, outdoor activities to warm, inside ones while highlighting the best part, the memories.
