Fans enjoyed an exciting game for the Raiders as they went up against the Bridgewater-Raritan Panthers and won 53-35 January 20. Going into this game, Bridgewater seemed a formidable opponent having a 10-3 record. Hillsborough pushed through, playing with strong zone defense and keeping a consistent lead throughout the game.
“We work a lot on defense so we can guard the opposing team well,” senior Peter Trespeces said.
The team showcased skills they have been working on for the game. Players stood on the court and the game was on from the tip-off. Bridgewater took possession of the ball to start. Hillsborough eventually stole the ball and consistently kept it away from the opponent. Despite this powerful defense, Bridgewater started to take the lead. Time outs were called for the team to rethink their strategy. This strategy worked for the Raiders, as the team started closing in, ending the period in a solid tie of 14-14.
Heading into the second period Bridgewater stole the first point, looking to pull ahead. The Raiders were determined and caught up to the Panthers once more, taking a lead. The boys powered through, continuing to play with secure offense. Their strong consistency helped them finish off the quarter with a 26-18 lead.
Third period was in Hillsborough’s favor. Bridgewater was quick to get the ball first but failed to score. The ball was passed back and forth on the court, meanwhile the scores for each team stayed close. Despite their narrow lead, the Raiders kept their guard up and looked to widen the gap.
The final minutes of the quarter were fast-paced and cutthroat, as a timeout was called for both teams to rethink their plays. In the end, the Panthers failed at their attempts to score some final points, allowing Hillsborough to keep their 37-24 lead.
In the final moments of the game, players on both teams gave it their all, amping up the aggressiveness. Hillsborough played strong defensively and kept their consistent lead. Time was running out, but the Raiders broke through the opponent’s defense and secured themselves a 53-35 victory.
“The season has been good. We feel confident going into states,”sophomore Layne Pawlowski said.
Their season record of 22-7 demonstrates a team that has worked hard this season. This was the second victory in a row for the Raiders following their win on Jan. 15 against Pingry High School. After multiple success in the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group 4 tournament, the team hopes to win it all against Montgomery on March 6.
