In the past month, the high school has reported a number of traffic violations in the parking lot.
On Jan. 29. the school administration collaborated with the Hillsborough Township Police Department in an email sent out to parents and students of the high school to acknowledge complaints regarding traffic violations and remind people of proper safety in the parking lots of the school. In addition, the school recommended multiple practices for drivers in order to ensure prevention of certain violations that are recurring in the parking lot.
In addition to this email, the boro_raiders Instagram account posted a reminder to students and parents. “During these months of snow and ice, sidewalks and pavements can be tricky to navigate. Why risk the slip dropping off your kids further away from the school? Our buses are ready to provide a safe, direct route directly onto school grounds where cars may not be able to access, even when pavements are messy,” the reminder read.
According to HHS Resource Officer Chris Kennedy, these accidents have been occurring due to newcomers to the high school parking lot, with the issuing of new parking passes. “There’s the first half of the school year, and then there’s the second half of the school year, and there’s usually a lag of compliance,” he explained.
Although the HTPD collaborated with the school to promote traffic safety, regulation of the parking lot is largely up to the Board of Education. Kennedy said, “There’s policies in place by the school and the Board of Education that put it out there for students to follow, now if they follow it or not is up to them.” The police department then follows with responses to traffic violations. “There’s oversight. There’s a three-warning system to get people on board before a summons is actually issued,” said Kennedy.
Although these traffic issues are presently an issue, it is likely that they cease as new parking pass holders get used to the lot and the weather gets warmer.
