Marching band ends fall season with accolades aplenty
December 7, 2015
Many students are involved in a number of activities here at the school. Some are involved sports, others are apart of the school play but some are involved in a different kind of endeavor, one which combines art and competition. The marching band competes in several competitions throughout its fall season in addition to providing the encouraging soundtrack to every football game of the season.
This year’s concept, Mad World, based on the story of Alice in Wonderland, captivated audiences each time it was performed. Additionally, it also enchanted judges at competitions leading the band to win Best Music, Best Marching, Best Color Guard, and Best Effects several times during the season including the Group V Open State Championship where they were again recognized with awards for Best Music, Best Color Guard, & Best Overall Effect.
There are several moving parts to this seamless operation such as the dedication of the marching band staff, the Student Leadership Team, as well as the support of the parents but there is also a mantra which gets the band members to perform at such a high level.
“Character, Pride, Teamwork, Learning, Musicianship, Honor, Leadership, Discipline, & Friendship,” band director Jules Haran said when referring to the band’s ideology.
This statement couldn’t be more true with every part being just as essential as the next. If one section is missing in the fold, it all comes tumbling down. It all starts right after the previous marching band season in December when the staff works diligently, behind the scenes, designing a show that will be sure to amaze crowds. They put in countless hours for months leading up to the next season. Not only that, but they also have to teach the students the whole show and make sure all of the smallest details are fine-tuned in the months leading up to the competitions. Speaking of the students, they also have to put in many hours of hard work in order to make everything go off without a hitch. The hours add up and the dedication needed is not to be taken lightly.
“Rehearsals are Mondays and Wednesday evenings, Friday afternoons before a football game, and Saturday afternoons before a competition,” Haran said. “All rehearsals and performances are mandatory.”
With that said, the members of the band have to give a lot of their time up in order to participate but many would probably say that it is extremely worth it for the results they generate from all of their hard work. From winning the state trophy to creating a network of loving, diligent companions, the Hillsborough Raiders Marching Band has achieved undeniable greatness that many can only dream of. Let’s hope they can create the same magic next season.
