Student council helps battered women
December 11, 2015
Every year student council advisers and members put a smile on the faces of people who suffer from domestic violence. The gesture is what the holiday spirit embodies.
Unfortunately, 31 percent of women worldwide report being abused by a boyfriend or husband and the Resource Center of Somerset provides a safe place for these women.
During their difficult times, the women and their families are grateful student council can provide them with a holiday party to direct some holiday cheer in their direction.
“With the money we made from homecoming we were able to provide these women with an enjoyable party,” student council adviser Caryn Morrison said. “We were able to get gift cards from Target and Walmart and simple things they may need.”
The party took place at The Resource Center of Somerset on Dec. 2 when everyone gathered to rejoice and honor the spirit of giving.
“I think it was wonderful to give back to the less fortunate,” senior Alia Rind said. “These families have been through a lot and I am grateful to help them out.”
This year, student council dressed up as elves and put a smile on many faces. They even had Santa make a surprise appearance!
“I really enjoyed the atmosphere and how happy everyone was,” junior Carly Swetz said.
Such institutions as The Resource Center of Somerset are instrumental in getting women the help they need to live safely.
The women in such shelters can identify with each other’s struggles and build a sisterhood focused on healing. These “safe houses” are in discrete locations and will never be revealed unless to those in need.
“This is a very important cause and I just wanted to help everyone out,” Caryn Morrison said.
