Whether you are a fan of pop, rock, alternative, country, or anything in between, it is safe to say that 2015 has been another great year for music, and we were all reminded of this when the 58th annual Grammy nominations were announced on Tuesday morning. With 83 award categories, many types of artists and genres are recognized, however, pop, rap, and R&B continue to dominate the nominations for major awards.

Rapper Kendrick Lamar emerged with the most nominations, 11, including Album of the Year for his third studio album “To Pimp a Butterfly,” and Song of the Year for “Alright.” A relative newcomer to the Grammy’s, Lamar was first nominated in 2014 for seven different awards, none of which he ended up winning. Last year, Lamar took home the Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance awards for his song “i.”

Pop artist Taylor Swift, and R&B singer the Weeknd were close behind with seven nominations each, including Best Solo Performance, Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year. Swift’s ultra-hyped “1989,” which sold over five million copies, and its song “Blank Space” appeared frequently on the nomination list, along with The Weeknd’s “Beauty Behind the Madness” and hit track, “Can’t Feel My Face.”

Like Lamar, The Weeknd is another newcomer. Prior to the upcoming awards, he has only been nominated for one Grammy—Best Rap/Sung Collaboration with Wiz Khalifa for “Remember You.” Meanwhile, Swift, first nominated in 2008 for Best New Artist, has been a regular Grammy nominee since she took home the awards for album of the year and best country album for “Fearless” in 2010.

In my opinion, these three artists are very deserving of their nominations, though I can see why country and rock fans might be disappointed that their favorite bands and songs are not getting as much recognition. As an award show watcher myself, I like to see my favorite artists win.

Rock group, Alabama Shakes’ “Sound & Color,” and country artist, Chris Stapleton’s “Traveller,” are nominated along side the work of Lamar, Swift, and The Weeknd for album of the year. However, the lack of country and rock artists among the top nominees may have left fans of these genres feeling neglected—after all, the Grammy’s are supposed to be less of a popularity contest than award shows like the Billboard Music Awards or American Music Awards. However, as Los Angeles Times reporter Mikael Wood pointed out, the Academy simply cannot ignore music that gets as much buzz as Taylor Swift’s “1989,” even after she prohibited online streaming of her album.

Though, you may be asking, if that is true, how was the Academy able to completely disregard Adele’s newest album,”25,” which received possibly more buzz than Swift’s? Adele’s latest release is estimated to have sold 5 million copies just in the United States since its release on Nov. 20.

Sadly for Adele fans, the album missed the cut off date. Having been released after September 15, 2015, “25,” along with other popular albums such as Justin Bieber’s “Purpose,” and Coldplay’s “A Head Full of Dreams”, was not considered for this year’s nominations. Unfortunately, we will have to wait another year until we can watch Adele take home every single award at the 2017 Grammy’s.
