With the holiday season in full-spring, most people enjoy watching ABC Family’s famous 25 days of Christmas.  During the entire month of December, the station airs a different holiday classic.  However, this program will appear under a different label and format.

ABC Family is changing its name to Freeform at the start of January of 2016. ABC Family is a Disney-owned cable channel that has undergone multiple name changes.  The word “family” has been connected to the network’s name for almost 30 years.

The specific term “family” often correlates to concept and ideas of being unified.  The network now wants to attract individuals, and young people all while maintaining their current audience.

Anyone who does not exactly know the style of ABC Family would most likely assume it is a “family oriented” network, which is not true.

The change of the network’s name is mainly for the purpose of attracting a broader audience- mainly people between the ages 14-34.

The new name Freeform creates a positive picture in most people’s head when they hear the name.  Freeform is a fluent, clean word which attracts most.  It creates a feeling of power and opportunity with the root word “free” in it.

With the change of the network name, the style will remain the same.  Shows such as Pretty Little Liars and The Fosters will continue to air on the channel.

While most social media fanatics love posting about ABC Family and its popular shows, Freeform is a fresh and new start to a great channel.
