For a teenager in high school, gym is the last thing they want to participate in. Some students are too busy worrying about sweating, some worry about messing up their hair, or some are just too lazy entirely.

While this is true for most gym classes, there is one particular class where a good majority of the students look past these worries. This class is Power Volleyball.

Power Volleyball is a class offered to proficient volleyball students in the school that consists entirely of volleyball. While there is another volleyball course offered by the physical education department, this class brings a more advanced level of play and is meant for skilled players.

Since volleyball is a fairly easy game to learn the mechanics of, kids of all athletic abilities can enjoy it. Being simple to learn is the best part of Power volleyball as it teaches people how to properly play a game all while helping hone the skills of the students.

The students do not take this opportunity lightly, and it is one of the most popular classes to get in to. Most people really enjoy the sport of Volleyball and like the advanced manner in which the class partakes in.

“It is a great class to get a good game of volleyball going,” junior Patrick Cahill said.

While the point of these games is to have fun and practice, games can get extremely intense. Everyone wants to win and absolutely crush the other team.

I am in this gym class and can personally say that games can get very serious. Playing against friends can become extremely intense since everyone wants to prove that they are better than everybody else. In my opinion, there is no greater feeling in gym class than spiking on classmate.

Lee Ann Best, a gym teacher who loves teaching the class, said, “For the most part they are choosing this class because they actually want to be here and they have skill so it makes games more interesting.”

It just goes to show that kids do want to play a serious game of volleyball.

Even the newly formed fitness days are fun in this class. They have played games like prison break (a form of dodgeball) and relay races. This, to me, is a much better option than walking around the gym 100 times.

Other than just fitness days, power volleyball is a great source of exercise. Teams who can both compete will be moving around a lot and will get tons of exercise in the process.

Teachers like Best and Amy Borer make the class extremely fun, even sometimes taking part in the games.

Power volleyball is a phenomenal class and will always be my favorite gym class. If you’re looking for a thrilling, fast paced, extremely fun gym class, then I highly recommend any student to partake in this the next time the chance is given.
