Hollywood celebrates the 73 annual Golden Globes
January 13, 2016
On Sunday, the Beverly Hilton Hotel held the 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards, which honored 2015’s year in cinema and television.
Host Ricky Gervais returned after a three year hiatus. He had a lot to live up to after the widespread acclaim for Amy Poehler and Tina Fey’s performances as co-hosts for the last two years. While Gervais served some funny jokes in his monologue, most of his one-liners were lazy insults. The show might have been funnier if every other joke wasn’t censored out. Half of the jokes were deemed inappropriate for television, leaving the audiences at home listening to more silence than jokes.
Despite this, the night honored the most prestigious members of Hollywood for all of their work in 2015. Winner of Best Motion Picture- Comedy was Ridley Scott’s The Martian. The Martian follows the story of Mark Watney (Matt Damon), an astronaut stranded on Mars and desperate for survival. As jokes were sporadic, The Martian was controversially placed in the category of Best Motion Picture-Comedy. However, Matt Damon deservedly took the Golden Globe home for Best Actor in a comedy.
One surprise of the night was when global popstar Lady Gaga won the Golden Globe for Best Performance in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television. Fellow nominee, Queen Latifah, was the favorite to win the award, but Gaga took the honor for her performance in Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story: Hotel.
A refreshing part of the night was when Tom Hanks gave an emotional and eloquent speech while delivering the Cecil B. DeMille to friend and colleague, Denzel Washington. Washington was honored for his exceptional career in film. Upon accepting the award, Washington remained humble and charming, as he took his family on stage with him. He demonstrated how down to earth some in the industry are by repeatedly thanking his wife and family for all of their continuous support.
Many were elated to see that Leonardo Dicaprio won his third Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama based on his performance in the gripping historical drama, The Revenant. Upon earning this well-deserved win, Dicaprio is now the favorite to win Best Actor at the Oscars, an award the great actor has yet to win.
Brie Larson, an actress who is relatively new on the scene, took home the award for Best Actress for her role in The Room. The story follows a mother who is abducted, and imprisoned in a room where she must raises her son.
Finally, the Best Drama or Motion Picture, arguably the most coveted award of the night, was granted to Alejandro González Iñárritu’s The Revenant. The cast and crew were forced to endure the bitter Alaskan wilderness for months at a time, all while telling the harrowing tale of a man desperate for survival.
While Gervais flopped as a host, and the glitz and glam of Hollywood was at an all time high, the Golden Globes recognized all of the amazing work seen through film and televison this past year.
