One of Doom’s classics is “Doomsday.” If you aren’t familiar with MF Doom, you should make it a priority.

From Great Britain to the ghettos of New York, MF Doom aka Daniel Dumile, emerged from a dark place. Doom is a underground rapper hailing from the NYC projects.  He began rapping with his brother, DJ Subroc, by the name Zev Love X and slowly these two creators made the famous underground rap group KMD, and acronym for Kausing Much Damage.

Doom began his rapping career having an upbeat style.  His voice was light and energetic resembling today’s A$AP Rocky.  However, this didn’t hold up for too long.  One night in Long Island, DJ Subroc was crossing a highway and got struck by a vehicle.  Not only did Subroc die, but so did Zev Love X.  After the death of Doom’s brother he went into a deep depression, but would later emerge with a new sound that would leave a permanent mark on the world of hip hop.

Apparently, the brothers were inseparable at birth which made it extremely hard on Zev Love X.  His last album under that name was released a few months after the death in KMD and that would be the last material the public would hear of a happy Doom.

MF Doom was created from the dark places inside Dumile’s mind.  His name was inspired from Dr.Doom in the Fantastic Four and Doom was seeking revenge on the hip-hop industry that took his brother.  MF Doom is the most popular underground rap artist to this day.  The man is so mysterious it brings out the curiosity in anyone.

Many don’t understand the purpose of his famous metallic mask.  By molding a Darth Maul mask and combining many of his favorite villains’ face structures, Dumile created one of the most recognized symbols in hip-hop culture.  Doom doesn’t let the mask leave his face in public because he is still trying to take his vengeance on the hip-hop industry.  Dumile sometimes will have a MF Doom concert but will send in someone else to perform with the mask while he is hidden among the crowd.  Overall, Doom is not your average musician, let alone human.

From Zev Love X to the masked man, Dumile came into the industry like no other hip-hop artist.  If DJ Subroc didn’t die who knows where Doom would have gone.  We most certainly would not have privileged with the original, lyrical style MF Doom is now famous for.

I believe Doom is producing some of the finest underground rap around. Albums such as Doomsday and Madvillainy are now classics which stand alongside other hip hop classics such as Illmatic and The Low End Theory.  Doom’s use of samples from cartoons from the 70’s and 80’s meshes smoothly with his rhymes and melodies to create sounds like no other in the rap game.  If you enjoy unique hip-hop and want to strive towards less drum beat rap, MF Doom is the rapper for you.
