Anthem of the Seas plays a sad song
February 17, 2016
What should have been a normal vacation for 6,000 passengers on the cruise ship Anthem of the Seas turned into disaster when the vessel sailed right into the eye of a hurricane.
Royal Caribbean is now facing scrutiny after the ship sailed into a storm in the Atlantic. The company and the captain apologized to passengers in a statement sent shortly before the ship docked, saying “we have to do better.”
For roughly 12 hours, passengers of the Anthem of the Seas hunkered down in their rooms Sunday as the captain of the cruise ship battled rough seas off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.
Once the storm passed the damage was evident. Glass was broken, ceilings collapsed, and rooms look like they had been hit by bombs.
The vacation was cut short as the damaged ship limped back to port. Everyone aboard is now furious. Questions remain unanswered.
Why did the captain put the passengers in this situation? If he knew about this storm four days in advance why did he decide to go directly into it?
Royal Caribbean and Captain Claus Andre Andersen now face major allegations.
“I honestly have not seen a low pressure that was not forecasted, anything near what we actually experienced,” Andersen said in a statement published by CNN.
Passengers and investigators are questioning the validity of Andersen’s claims.
Meanwhile, Royal Caribbean said it will move swiftly to change its policy for avoiding storms. They plan to hire more support personnel at their Miami headquarters, a spokesperson with the company told CNN.com. The company also plans thoroughly review this incident to determine ways to avoid similar situations in the future.
However, this is not the first incident that the Anthem of the Seas has encountered. Whether Captain Andersen is to blame and whether his license will be revoked remains to be determined.
NTSB may investigate the situation shortly and determine the outcome for the captain.
