Feb. 15 marked the 58th Grammy Awards, paying homage to all of music’s biggest stars- past and present. The evening featured performances ranging from all genres, while also recognizing those who transcended music in 2015.

The first award of the night was for Best rap album. Those nominated included Nicki Minaj, Drake, J.Cole, Kendrick Lamar, and Dr. Dre. Unsurprisingly, Lamar won for his inspiring album, “To Pimp a Butterfly.” The album was given accolades for offering a deep political message, in hopes of enacting change.

Best country album was the next Grammy up for grabs. Nominees included novices such as Sam Hunt, Kacey Musgraves, and Ashley Monroe while also recognizing country veterans like Chris Stapleton and Little Big Town. Despite Hunt being predicted to win, it was Stapleton who triumphed for his album “Traveller.”

Following this, came Song of the Year. Despite tough competition, Ed Sheeran and Amy Wadge won for “Thinking out Loud.” This award marked the first Grammy win for both Wadge and Sheeran.

The next category, and possibly most coveted, was Best New Artist. Past recipients include John Legend, Carrie Underwood, Adele, Sam Smith, and many others. Hunt, Meghan Trainor, James Bay, Tori Kelly, and Courtney Barnett were among those in the running for this year. While all of those nominated are exceptionally talented, Trainor came out victorious. Some of her hits from the past year include “All About that Bass” and “Lips are Movin’.”

The final and arguably biggest category of the night was dedicated to Album of the Year. Those nominated included Lamar, Stapleton, Taylor Swift, the Weeknd, and Alabama Shakes. Even though many expected Lamar to win, it was Swift who took the Grammy home that night for her album, 1989. She gracefully accepted the award with a moving acceptance speech, giving the advice to never let anyone “undercut your success.”

With the Grammy’s behind us, it is important to look back on 2015’s year in music to recognize the work that surpassed the rest of the industry, while also looking forward to 2016 with the hopes of another great year for music.
