The senior class was not the only group that walked away from Spirit Night with a win. The organization Steps Together received a donation of $4,000 on behalf of Hillsborough High School.

Steps together is an organization that first began in 2012 and was founded by Hillsborough residents Courtney and Mike Newman. According to its official website, Steps Together was created to assist local families amid crisis.

Steps Together helps families who find themselves in an unexpected and unavoidable health crisis,” the organization’s website states.

It is fitting that Hillsborough’s spirit night contributes to an organization that puts the money back into the Hillsborough community. Starting in 2016, Steps Together shifted its focus to help families located in Somerset County.

The funds for the donation were raised by HHS’s Penny Wars, which were a huge success this year. The student body raised approximately $2,000, and with Student Council matching the amount, a $4,000 check was given to Steps Together.

At Spirit Night, Melissa Almendinger, a board member of Steps Together, accepted the check on behalf of the organization. She was welcomed with a generous round of applause from the loud student body in attendance.

“We chose this charity because they have been helping people in our town,” Student Council adviser Caryn Morrison said.
