HHS Theater puts on fall production of “The Curious Savage”
November 23, 2016
This past weekend, HHS Theater put on their fall production of The Curious Savage at Auten Road Intermediate School. The show was directed by HHS history teacher, Casey Fitzgerald and ran from November 18-20.
The Curious Savage is a comedic play, written by John Patrick, which follows the story of Ethel P. Savage, an elderly woman whose husband recently passed away and left her with approximately ten million dollars. Mrs. Savage’s greedy three children go to desperate measures trying to get their hands on the inherited money, going as far as sending their mother to a sanatorium, hoping to bring her to her senses and tell them where the money is.
Throughout the show, Mrs. Savage spends her money on what may seem like foolish things, instigating her children’s anger further. However, all she really wants to do is have fun and inspire others to do the same, while simultaneously realizing their hopes and dreams.
The dominant mood of the performance is high comedy, and the audience is left with a feeling that the ignored virtues of kindness and affection have not been entirely forgotten in a world full of dishonesty and greed.
The Voice sat down with the production’s Mrs. Savage herself, senior Katie Ciurleo, to discuss her experience being the lead of the show.
“I love theater,” Ciurleo said. “I’ve been auditioning for HHS Theater since my freshman year.” The Curious Savage was Ciurleo’s final fall play. When asked what her favorite part of the show was, she replied with one of the final scenes where her character must make her individual goodbyes to all of the new friends she made in the sanatorium.
“It was my favorite part because it sort of symbolized my actual goodbyes to all of my friends who have been with me in HHS theater throughout the past 4 years… I truly am going to miss them, just like my character would” Ciurleo said.
