Over winter break, millions of people went to the city to see Broadway shows, one of these being Jersey Boys. Jersey Boys tells the story of the legendary Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. In the beginning, Frankie Valli’s life before fame is shown, and how he struggles to balance both school and the start of his singing career. The story then continues to show how Valli, Bob Gaudio, Nick Massi, and Tommy DeVito came together to form the Four Seasons.

During the first act, The Four Seasons are shown during their prime time of fame. Their success is exemplified through the many recognizable and iconic songs within Jersey Boys. After showing the times in which they thrived as a band, the mood drops at the end of the act as the audience discovers that member Nick Massi is in hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt, marking the fall of the band in their time of success.

In contrast to the first act, the second act is more depressing as it shows how both Valli’s life and The Four Seasons’ career goes downhill. After NMassi and DeVito quit due to tension within the band, Valli and Gaudio are left as the only remaining members of The Four Seasons.

Along with Valli’s career hitting rock bottom, his life gets even worse as he learns that his daughter, Francine, died of a drug overdose. Despite the disheartening events that occurred in Valli’s life, things begin to look up as he jumps back into the music scene as a solo act with Gaudio as his producer. Frankie continued to put out hit songs, the most recognizable being “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You.”

Jersey Boys is a great musical that keeps everyone in the audience very entertained. Both the music and actors who played the members of the Four Seasons contribute to how great the show is. One of the most notable actors is Jon Hacker, who played Frankie Valli. Hacker was able to imitate Valli’s unique singing voice perfectly, making the story feel more authentic to the audience.

Although the play consists of numerous musical numbers, they act as an additional tool to help tell the story of The Four Seasons. Furthermore, what makes the show more interesting is that the point of view alternated between each of the four members, which helped to give the audience input on all of the members’ opinions on their time within the band, and the eventual end of the group.

Lastly, it was interesting to see how far people from New Jersey, like The Four Seasons, are able to go, and how much fame they are able to obtain. With that being said, if you are able to do so, I would highly recommend seeing Jersey Boys before the last show on Sunday, January 15.
