This past Sunday, all of Hollywood’s best stars came together at the Beverly Hilton Hotel as Jimmy Fallon hosted the 74th annual Golden Globe Awards.

For the 20 different categories of awards given out, La La Land took home the most. Both Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone won the awards for Best Actor and Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy, respectively, and the film itself also won Best Musical or Comedy Motion Picture. Damien Chazelle won both Best Director of a Motion Picture and Best Screenplay of a Motion Picture for his film that took six years to make.

La La Land continued to win accolades as Justin Hurwitz took home the Golden Globes for Best Original Score in a Motion Picture and Best Original Song, in this case “City of Stars.”

For the drama films from 2016, Moonlight took home one of the most important awards of the night: Best Drama Motion Picture. Isabelle Huppert won Best Actress in a Drama for her role in Elle, the French film that also won Best Foreign Language Film. Casey Affleck won the award for Best Actor in a Drama for Manchester by the Sea, one of the most critically acclaimed films of the year.

For supporting roles, Aaron Taylor-Johnson won for Nocturnal Animals and Viola Davis won for Fences. For animated films, Disney’s Zootopia won narrowly beating out Disney’s other film from this year, Moana.

As if it were combining the Academy Awards and the Emmy Awards, the Golden Globes honors both film and television. Atlanta won for Best TV Series, Comedy or Musical and its star Donald Glover won Best Actor, TV Series Comedy or Musical for his role. Tracee Ellis Ross won Best Actress, TV Series Comedy or Musical for Black-ish, making her the first African-American to do so in 30 years.

For dramas, Netflix’s original show The Crown which depicts the life of Queen Elizabeth II in her early years as a monarch won Best TV Series Drama. Claire Foy won Best Actress in a TV Series Drama for her performance as Queen Elizabeth and Billy Bob Thornton won Best Actor for the same category for his role in Goliath.

The Golden Globes also acknowledge the performances of actors and actresses who starred in either a limited series or a movie made just for television. Sarah Paulson, known previously for her roles on American Horror Story, won for The People vs. OJ Simpson: An American Crime Story in which she played Marcia Clark, the prosecuting attorney who worked against OJ Simpson. Tom Hiddleston also won for his part in The Night Manager.

For television, supporting actors and actresses of dramas, limited series, and TV movies are all put into one categories. Hugh Laurie and Olivia Colman both won for their roles in The Night Manager.

After decades of starring in countless films and receiving dozens of nominations for her roles, Meryl Streep was awarded the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award. In a powerful speech, she accepted her award and talked about the importance of diversity in film. Without naming names, Streep took the opportunity to turn her award into a political platform, urging Americans to stand up against bullies.

If the Golden Globes are any indication of what films will be taking home Oscars come February, La La Land is definitely a top contender.
