President Trump begins term as 45th President
February 1, 2017
Jan. 20 was truly a historic day as President Donald J. Trump was sworn into office, and it has been a little over a week since the start of this new administration. The inauguration garnered attention from around the world, as the controversial president-elect officially became the leader of the United States.
In his first presidential address, Trump gave insight as to what he wishes to accomplish as president. First and foremost, he is still adamant about constructing a wall on the border of the US and Mexico to prevent illegal immigration. He also wishes to end the “carnage” that ravages US cities.
Although Trump ran on the republican ticket, he has since proven that he is not your typical conservative. Since his inauguration, Trump has remained extremely active on Twitter and continued his fight against the mainstream media. He has attacked the media for its portrayal of the inauguration, as many outlets used footage that showed the emptiness of the crowd. Trump, however, claims that these photos are fake, and in reality millions were in the audience. The staffers working for the Trump administration have even coined their spin on the truth as “alternative facts.”
Since taking the oath of office, Trump has reinstated the Mexico City Policy, a law that makes it illegal for the US to fund international groups that promote abortion. This act has caused outrage amongst many feminist and pro-choice groups.
President Trump has also signed a highly controversial executive order that bans Muslims from particular countries to seek refuge in America. The executive order was met with immediate criticism and protests from many Americans. Hundreds gathered at JFK Airport where two Muslims were being detained to protest Trump’s new policy.
While it is unclear how the next four years will play out, one can only hope that President Trump will attempt to mend the divisiveness in the country and begin to unify the people of all parties, races, genders, and religions.
