Adele and Chance the Rapper steal the Grammy Awards show
February 22, 2017
On Feb. 12, the Grammy Awards aired on CBS. During the three and a half hour show, there were multiple amazing performances, and awards were given out to various deserving artists. Among those awarded include artists such as Adele, who won five Grammys, the most of the evening. The five Grammys that she received included Album of the Year, and although Adele beat Beyonce, she used her time given to express her love and appreciation for her.
Another big winner of the night was newcomer Chance the Rapper. Chance the Rapper won three Grammys in the categories of Best Rap Album, Best New Artist, and Best Rap Performance. This was a historical moment for the music world as it was the first time in which a streaming-only album has won.
Also, there were many great performances by the world’s most popular artists. Performances were given by artists such as Bruno Mars, who sang his hit single “That’s What I Like.” Later in the show, Mars changed into a sleek purple suit in order to perform his tribute to Prince; he sang some of Prince’s greatest hits, one of these being “Let’s Go Crazy.” Both the public and critics alike believed that Bruno’s tribute to Prince was one of the greatest performances of the night.
Another remarkable performance was that of Chance the Rapper. Chance brought church to the Grammys as he incorporated a gospel choir into his performance. Chance was able to combine soul, gospel, and hip-hop as he sang “How Great” and “All We Got.” By combining many different genres, his performance appealed to many different demographics of people. Chance’s performance made it clear to those who did not know of him before the Grammys why he deserves all of the success that he has gained within the past few years.
Furthermore, Adele performed a heart-wrenching rendition of George Michael’s “Fastlove” as a tribute to the recently deceased icon. Although it was a great performance, Adele had a rocky start as she asked to start over, saying that she “couldn’t mess it up for him.” Despite her rough beginning, Adele’s performance brought many people both in the audience and at home to tears as she helped them remember the great George Michael.
Overall, the Grammys was an entertaining show, but it was unnecessary for it to be three and a half hours long. The duration of the show was due to the fact that there were so many performances, some of which were not needed. Next year, the Grammys should minimize the number of performances in order to keep the attention of the viewers, andto cut down the running time of the show. However, despite the lengthy duration of the show, the Grammys was a great way to honor deserving artists in the music world this year.
