The girls lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season this past Saturday, defeating Pingry by a score of 12-6.

The Raiders are now 1-1 on the season, as they dropped their first game of the season in a disappointing 4-14 loss to Bernards.

In its win over Pingry, the team put forth a strong offensive effort scoring 12 goals, 8 of them coming in the first half.

Five different Hillsborough players put the ball in the net, including the juniors Olivia Buckman and Olivia Johnsen, and sophomore Lisa Ross who each scored 3 goals apiece. Johnsen also added 4 assists. Sophomore Gabriella Vangeli added 2 more goals, and senior Sarah Spence scored a goal with 2 assists.

Sophomore Brooke McCormick was a force in the net, accumulating 11 saves.

This year’s team includes a number of girls who have committed to playing collegiate lacrosse. Buckman is committed Georgetown, Johnsen to Central Michigan University, Ross to Saint Joseph’s University, Vangeli to Monmouth University, Spence to Saint Leo University, senior Lauryn Yaskowski to Lock Haven University, senior Sam Marsh to Ithaca College, and sophomore Kendall Smith to Hofstra University.

The team hopes to improve on last season’s 14-5 record, which featured strong efforts by many athletes including Johnsen, who finished the season with 57 goals and 37 assists.
