On April 3, the varsity baseball team opened its season with a big 2-1 win over Hunterdon Central, a top 20 team according to local newspapers.

This season will feature multiple young players because of the key seniors lost last season. However, junior Matt Kuc is optimistic coming off their first win.

“It was a great way to kick off the season to beat the defending county champs,” Kuc said. “It will give our young team the confidence we need for the rest of the season.”

Kuc pitched two full innings without letting in any runs, striking out two players, and walking none. Junior Chris Coutts also led the team, pitching five innings and striking out four players.

After a tight game, the score was tied at one in the bottom of the eighth inning. The bases were loaded, setting up junior Kyle Wengryn to hit a walk-off single and giving Hillsborough a 2-1 win over Hunterdon Central.

“I really couldn’t have done it if it wasn’t for well executed plays and key hitting,” Wengryn said. “The team made by job very easy.”

The rest of the season is looking up for the team as they go into their next home game on Thursday, Apr. 6 against Hopewell Valley.

“Our first game gave us a positive outlook on the season,” junior Zack Tynan said. “Coming into this season with a young staff we weren’t sure how we would perform, but this game definitely motivated us.”
