The girls soccer team suffered a 3-0 loss to Pingry Tuesday. Pingry was a well coached, skilled team whose starting lineup was experienced, agile and aggressive.

The first half didn’t go exactly as the team would’ve hoped. It began with a goal that unfortunately deflected off of defender Delaney Smith. The bad luck didn’t stop there. A few minutes later, a shot tipped off of Hillsborough goalkeeper Olivia Bandola’s hands and slowly rolled into the net. To cap it off, a Pingry player struck a booming kick that made its way into the goal from far outside the box.

Nevertheless, head coach Leonart Bitter and his resilient squad were reluctant to quit. The second half showed promising signs for Boro girls soccer. Unlike the first half of the game, they had a significantly higher time of possession while also managing to put up a lot of shots on goal. While they didn’t manufacture a goal, the intensity and effort was obvious for any fan.

In particular, freshman Ava Curtis stood out with her skillful footwork and impressive moves. Curtis came close to scoring multiple goals, but came up just a little short.

“Although we may have lost to Pingry, we honestly played very well,” senior Olivia Panagos said.

Losing 3-0 is never the goal of any team. However, the second half highlighted the potential that this group of girls possess. While Pingry may have controlled the pace of the pitch this game, Boro girls soccer’s grit was on full display.

“During the whole second half, we showed great teamwork and great effort,” Panagos said. “I think that’s an important takeaway from this loss.”
