Book of Mormon still a Broadway must see event
September 28, 2017
Over the summer, I had the pleasure to see the musical comedy Book of Mormon on Broadway. This show has been around for several years now, winning nine Tonys when it first opened, including Best Musical. Book of Mormon was also the show that brought Andrew Rannells and Josh Gad fame. Although both leads left the show years ago, Book of Mormon continues to entertain hundreds of people each week.
Written by the creators of South Park, Book of Mormon is a musical satire that centers on two young missionaries that are sent to Uganda in order to convince the citizens to become Mormons. One missionary, Elder Price, is enthusiastic and dedicated to his faith, while his partner, Elder Cunningham, is a socially awkward boy who has a tendency to tell a lie. The musical follows their journey in Uganda as they discover that the people of a land filled with poverty, violence, and AIDs will be difficult to convert to Mormonism.
Going into the theater, I had high expectations about the musical as I had heard such great reviews from both respected critics and people I know; once I saw the play, it is safe to say that my expectations were exceeded. Replacing Andrew Rannells and Josh Gad, Nic Rouleau played Elder Price and Brian Sears played Elder Cunningham; although the original cast will remain the best, Rouleau and Sears did their roles justice as they were each very talented. There was never a dull moment during the play as the cast had the crowd laughing each minute. Although the musical was a satire, the cast was able to teach the audience a thing or two about Mormonism even if it was in the most bizarre way possible.
Overall, this was a great play for those who do not necessarily like musical theater as it had a great balance of both talking and singing. Also, the comedy aspect was able to keep the entire audience entertained. With that being said, Book of Mormon is a must see no matter if you are a musical theater lover or not; I give it a 10/10.
