Field hockey team earns convincing win on Senior Night
October 11, 2017
For all senior athletes, one of the most special nights of their sports season is Senior Night. On Oct. 10, the HHS field hockey team had their Senior Night game on home turf against North Hunterdon which turned out to be a huge success.
The game opened up with the seniors going out onto the field with their parents to take pictures. They got to feel the support of their families and teammates while they celebrated their special night. After the ceremony, it was game on.
Right from the get-go, the Raiders had the upperhand. The first goal of the game came early in the first half and was scored by senior Allie Benadon, who has lead the team all season in goals, having shot almost half of all the total goals scored for the team.
Sophomore Jena Myers then stepped in and scored a goal, followed by another shot by senior Tara Herterich, which brought the score to a coomfortable 3-0 in the Raiders’ favor at halftime.
Even from the stands, it was clear that the Raiders halftime huddle was full of high spirits, an important part of all school sports, especially on the night of a milestone for the seniors.
Coming back into the game for round two, the team did not let up as junior Amanda Donnelly brought the score tally up to 4-0 for the Raiders. And for the last time of the night the Raiders scored yet again thanks to senior Stephanie Wickman. Wickman’s strike brought the final score of the game to a convincing 5-0.
Both Benadon and fellow senior Lauren Alexander had one assist each and sophomore Payton Altman earned two, putting her in the lead for most assists this season.
And of course, the shutout score would have been impossible without the hard work to block every shot on the Raider goal by senior goalkeeper Macy Brandwein.
As sad as it is to see the seniors go, we know they have a strong season ahead of them and wherever they end up, we look forward to seeing their success in the future.
