Kevin Spacey is latest Hollywood titan to be accused of sexual misconduct

If there haven’t been enough allegations and instances of sexual assault or inappropriate behavior within the community of Hollywood actors and actresses lately, recent events involving Kevin Spacey have sparked that conversation yet again.

Spacey, an academy award-winning New Jersey native, is an actor who originally garnered fame through 1995 films The Usual Suspects and Se7en and has since been starring in the Netflix original TV series House of Cards.

Spacey’s credibility has recently come under fire after an accusation via a Buzzfeed article in which actor Anthony Rapp claimed Spacey sexually assaulted him at a Broadway party in 1986 when both of the men were performing in Broadway productions. At the time Spacey was 26 years old, and Rapp just 14.

Following Rapp’s statement, Spacey initially remained silent but then chose to issue an apology via Twitter. After preaching his respect for Rapp as an actor, Spacey went on to explain his mistakes.

“I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago,” Spacey said. “But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior . . .”

But Spacey’s statement does not stop there. In a sudden twist, he uses the situation as a way of exposing more of his unrevealed, true self.

“The story has encouraged me to address other things about my life,” Spacey said. “I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man. I want to deal with this honestly and openly and that starts with examining my own behavior.”

This situation has rightfully created a mass of controversy in the media. Many critics call Spacey’s pseudo-apology a scapegoat and have claimed that you can cite neither drunkenness nor closeted angst as reasons for sexual assault. And the fact that the incident “would have been over 30 years ago” is irrelevant. Assault is assault, no matter the time frame.

One of the major questions that come out of this situation is one that comes out of every incident of sexual assault: Why didn’t anyone say anything?

When asked why he didn’t speak out any sooner, Rapp said that he did not want to add fuel to the fire while the Harvey Weinstein allegations were still being processed. But perhaps that was even more reason as to why he should have said something.

There is, and always has been, a pressing issue of women refusing to come forward and speak out about their experiences with sexual harassment out of fear. But all too often do men’s experiences with the same go overlooked. Men can be harassed. Men can be assaulted. Men can be raped. If it happened 30 years ago, it is more than likely still happening today.

“I came forward with my story, standing on the shoulders of the many courageous women and men who have been speaking out, to shine a light and hopefully make a difference, as they have done for me,” Rapp said. “Everything I wanted to say about my experience is in that article, and I have no further comment about it at this time.”
