A real life horror story played out in New York City on the afternoon of Halloween. An attack took place when terrorist Sayfullo Saipov sped a rental truck down a popular bike path in Manhattan, killing eight people and injuring 11.

The terror began at 3:05 p.m. on Tuesday when Saipov turned his rental Home Depot flatbed truck onto the bike path at West Houston Street. The man then rammed the truck into nearly two dozen cyclists and pedestrians as he sped southbound down the path. Saipov also collided with a school bus at Chambers Street, injuring two adults and two children inside.

When he emerged from the truck, Saipov shouted “Allahu Akbar,” wielding a pellet gun and paintball gun; although these guns turned out to be fake, they were realistic enough to send bystanders into a chaotic frenzy. Saipov’s effect on the crowd did not last for long as he was then chased by an NYPD officer, and captured when shot in the abdomen. Although he lived through the gunshot wound, the rest of his life is guaranteed to be a living hell.

After the attack, surrounding buildings were put on lockdown, a part of FDR Drive shut down, and victims were brought to nearby hospitals. Saipov took the lives of eight people, six of whom were pronounced dead at the scene.

Now that Saipov has been captured, the NYPD and FBI are investigating the attack as one of terror, looking for any computers or phones of the perpetrator that may contain evidence. Search warrants have also been issued for New Jersey, Ohio, and Florida, which were all places of residence for Saipov according to police records and sources.

Since the case is fairly new, details are still being found and developed. One detail that has become obvious to the public is that this attack was similar to those terrorist attacks taking place in other parts of the world in which motor vehicles have run down pedestrians.

Despite the shock and fear that affected New York as the result of this attack, New Yorkers showed the attacker that they were strong, having the Village Halloween Parade despite the horrific acts that took place earlier in the day.

However, what most impactful from this lone-wolf terror attack is the fact that it took place only a few blocks from the previous site of the World Trade Center, acting as a sad reminder that terrorism is still negatively impacting both our country and the world around us.
