When one thinks of Hollywood, a few common images come to mind: lavish red carpets, huge movie stars dressed to the nines, and flashing camera bulbs. These images perfectly set the scene for the Golden Globe Awards.

The 75th annual Golden Globe Award ceremony, honoring the film and television industry, was held on Jan. 7, from the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. Talk show star Seth Meyers hosted the ceremony for the first time.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri was the big motion picture winner of the night, netting four awards, including the prized Best Picture- Drama statue. Its other wins include Best Screenplay, while individual actors Sam Rockwell and Frances McDormand won the Best Supporting Actor- Drama and Best Performance- Drama awards, respectively.

Other films with multiple wins include The Shape of Water and Lady Bird, which both took home two awards. Lady Bird won the award for Best Picture- Musical or Comedy.

As for television programs, critically acclaimed miniseries Big Little Lies captured four wins, the most of any TV show. Nicole Kidman won Best Performance in a Miniseries or Television Film- Actress, while Alexander Skarsgård and Laura Dern each won Best Supporting Performance in a Series, Miniseries or Television Film, in the actor and actress categories.

The Handmaid’s Tale and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel won two awards each. In addition, in his second nomination, This is Us actor Sterling K. Brown won his first Golden Globe, for Best Performance in a Miniseries or Television Film- Actor.

Oprah Winfrey won this year’s Cecil B. DeMille Award, for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment,” becoming the first African-American woman to receive the honor. She used her acceptance speech to voice her support for the #metoo movement, a video of which went viral over the following days.

Overall, a good time was had by all, and several movies and television shows achieved huge wins at this year’s Golden Globes.
